Definition

Cast travertine, defined in one paragraph.

Two words carry the meaning: travertine is the pattern being reproduced, cast is how the panel is made.

Cast travertine is an inorganic stone panel cast in a mould that reproduces travertine veining and pore structure. It is made from graded quartz aggregate, a high-strength cementitious binder and inorganic oxide pigment, with no resin, and is typically produced at 20 to 30 mm thick for wall, floor and facade use.

How the pattern is made

Travertine forms at mineral springs, where calcium carbonate precipitates in layers around gas bubbles, leaving the characteristic voids and banding. A cast panel reproduces that structure with a moulded face and a pigmented body: the pore pattern is tooled into the mould surface, and the veining is introduced during casting so that it reads through the thickness rather than sitting on top.

What is in the panel

ComponentRole
Graded quartz aggregateBody and hardness
High-strength cementitious binderSets the panel; makes it non-combustible
Inorganic oxide pigmentColour through the body
Moulded facePore pattern and surface texture

Hardness is Mohs 6–7, against roughly 3–4 for quarried travertine. It matters where a soft stone marks: floors, vanity tops, door reveals and the corners of a lift lobby. The hardness is in the body, not in a sealer.

What it is not

It is not a printed laminate, and it is not a resin composite. The difference matters in a wet area and on a facade: a resin-bound panel can delaminate and chalk, while a cementitious panel does neither. The trade-off is that a cementitious panel is heavier and cannot be bent after casting.

Questions buyers ask

What is cast travertine made of?
Quartz aggregate, a high-strength cementitious binder and inorganic pigment, cast in a moulded form. No resin binder.
Is it suitable outdoors?
Yes, in a ventilated facade system. It is UV stable and non-combustible, and it weighs about 42 kg/m² at 20 mm.
Can it be used on floors?
The panel is produced in 25 and 30 mm for floor and heavy-wear use; the appropriate thickness depends on the project and the substrate.
