Comparison
Unfilled is the honest surface. Filled is the practical one.
The pits are what make travertine recognisable, and they are also what hold dirt. Choosing between the two is a decision about who cleans it and how often.
Unfilled travertine keeps its open pores, giving the deeper texture and the more authentic look, but it traps dust and needs brushing. Filled travertine closes the pores with a matched material, giving a smoother, wipeable surface that suits bathrooms and high-traffic interiors.
| Unfilled (open pore) | Filled | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Visible pits, deeper shadow, more movement | Smoother, quieter, more uniform |
| Cleaning | Brush; dirt settles in the pores | Wipe with a cloth |
| Wet areas | Possible but demanding | Recommended |
| Exterior | Can hold dirt and biological growth in the pores | More forgiving |
| Repair | A filled pit is visible as a patch | Blends more easily |
| Best use | Feature walls, ceilings, low-touch surfaces | Bathrooms, kitchens, facades, floors |
How a cast panel delivers either
On quarried travertine, filling is a separate operation: a grout is worked into the pits and rubbed back, and the fill can discolour or fall out over time. On a cast panel the choice is made in the mould and in the finishing line, so the filled face is integral rather than applied. That is why the filled version does not develop the patchy look that old filled travertine often does.
The bathroom question
In a shower or a vanity area, the deciding factor is not water but soap and body oils, which lodge in open pores and are hard to lift out. Filled is the lower-risk specification. If the design insists on open pore in a wet area, use it on the dry walls of the room and keep it out of the splash zone.
Questions buyers ask
- Should I choose unfilled or filled travertine?
- Filled for bathrooms, kitchens, floors and facades, where cleaning matters. Unfilled for feature walls and ceilings where the texture is the point and nobody scrubs it.
- Can unfilled travertine be sealed?
- A penetrating sealer can slow dirt uptake but does not close the pores, and it needs reapplying. On a cast panel the simpler route is to specify the filled face where cleaning is a concern.
- Does filling change the colour?
- The fill is matched to the body colour, so the overall tone stays the same. The surface reads slightly lighter because the pits no longer cast shadow.
