Application
A round column is where a cast panel earns its keep.
You cannot clad a 600 mm radius column convincingly with flat panels and sealant. You can cast the curve.
Round and curved columns are clad with cast travertine segments formed to the column radius, typically in two or three pieces per course with vertical joints aligned. Because the curve is cast, the edge is formed rather than cut, and the segments can be made to a consistent radius down the shaft.
Segment layout
A column of 600 mm diameter is usually clad in two or three segments per course so each piece can be handled and the joints can be set on the least visible axis. The joints run vertically and should align from course to course, otherwise the shaft reads as spiralling.
Why cast beats cut here
| Approach | Result on a round column |
|---|---|
| Flat panels + sealant | Visible facets, wide joints, reads as a polygon |
| Narrow strips bent around | Many joints, pattern broken, labour heavy |
| Cast segments to radius | True curve, formed edges, one joint per segment |
Tolerance on a shaft
Columns are rarely truly round and rarely truly vertical. The segment radius is cast to the drawing; the deviation is absorbed at the fixing and at the joint. Survey the shaft before the mould is made, because a 20 mm out-of-round column will show at every joint if the segments are cast to the nominal radius.
Questions buyers ask
- Can travertine panels be curved for columns?
- Yes. Cast segments are formed to the column radius, up to 10 m in a single piece where the geometry allows, with the segment count set by handling.
- How many segments per course?
- Two or three for most structural columns. The count is set by the diameter, the handling weight and where the joints will be least visible.
- Do the joints need to align?
- Yes. Aligned vertical joints read as a deliberate shaft; staggered joints read as a mistake, especially in a banded travertine.
