Comparison

Natural travertine is the original. Cast is the one you can specify exactly.

This is not a claim that cast is better stone. It is a different product with different failure modes, and the specification should be decided on those.

Bedding plane vs none

Natural travertine is quarried and varies in colour, vein and pit depth between blocks, and can crack along its bedding plane. Cast travertine is moulded, so colour and pattern repeat, panels are lighter at equal thickness, and there is no bedding plane to split along. Natural wins on authenticity; cast wins on control.

The failure mode nobody mentions

Filled natural travertine can lose its fill. The grout shrinks or washes out and the panel reads patchy after a few years on a facade. It is the most common complaint about the material and it is a property of the fill, not the stone. A cast filled panel does not have a separate fill to lose.

Questions buyers ask

Is cast travertine a good substitute for natural travertine?
For large elevations, phased deliveries and projects where colour consistency is contractual, yes. For a small feature where the geological authenticity is the point, natural is the better answer.
Can people tell the difference?
At a metre, a trained eye can. At three metres, on a wall, most cannot, and the joint pattern and edge detail matter more than the material.
Which is cheaper?
It depends on the natural stone grade, the block yield and the fill work. Cast becomes cheaper as repetition rises because the mould and tooling are amortised; for one small feature, natural can be cheaper.
